True story and not so old. Was doing some work north east of Moody AFB in GA and driving back home to Jax FL. Had Hayes Carll playing loud on the XM radio and the big old Dodge started shaking like i was driving over the “rumble strips” on the shoulder. Lasted about 10- 15 sec. Then went away. I checked my driving, was confused a bit and figured I wasn’t paying attention. Then it happened again. Thought I was getting a flat or threw a wheel weight. Slowed down, turned down the radio and opened the window…….. Nothing… WYF? Then…. Pweeeeeerrrrrrrp!……. Pleweeeppppp! and two grey A-10′s in a sharp turn right over head. Very cool….and I can’t imagine being on the receiving end of a 30mm. Holy shit!

Maybe the greatest ground attack aircraft in history. Pretty much anything downrange is reduced to rubble and assorted scrap in seconds. I’ve seen other videos of Warthogs in action and they’re just plain awesome. One video in particular showed a Warthog attacking from BELOW tree top level. That pilot knew his stuff and actually looked like he was having fun.

I’ve seen a pic of one that suffered a direct hit during the Iraq invasion. Even though one wing was blown off, the pilot still made it back to base. Also during our our invasion of Iraq, they handily outscored the latest attack helicopters when in came to destroying tanks or anything else on the ground. Tough and maneuverable, with a lethal knock out punch, how much better performance could you have?

I’ve never understood why the Army wants to replace them with helicopters. They’re effective and paid for.

Hell yeah. It is one seriously awesome machine, but somebody owes somebody the favor of replacing something that works for more money. Just build more Warthogs, idiots. They work!

There are several A-10s stationed at Gowen Field in Boise, and they fly around all the time. I know the engines are where they are for a number of reasons, but I like to jokingly think that Republic forgot about them until the airframe was finished.

“Wait, we forgot engines! Where are we going to put them?”

“Damn…just slap them on the tail and call it good.”

Well, you know the airplane was designed as something to carry this big ass gun they’d built, right?

Yup, part of the subtle charm of the ship.
