As an aside, Drake and Co. are posting more stuff lately that seems geared to get us all wound up. (Not this particular piece) It doesn't feel good. I'm going to stop there.
HOW ABOUT VERMONT? … register "non-gun-owners" and require them to pay a $500 fee to the state…
This is awesome! Not only is every citizen the militia, but those same armed citizens may defend themselves against crime. If you aren't going to carry for defense of self or nation, then by God you can pay for the PD and the NG to exist!

THAT was very disturbing because it is all true. This has been implemented very methodically and going on for a very very long time.
I could see the flashes in my lifetime when I stopped fitting in because I could NOT adapt to the issues he was explaining. It just WENT AGAINST MY GRAIN. So, I became, for the most part, a Hermit.
I still say, if you want protection from whatever, you will have to pay in some fashion.

I live in Texas. You know that. I had someone break into my house and attack me.
The cop that investigated fussed at me for not having a gun. He flat out told me, “I don’t care if he is running out the door. Shoot him. Drag in back in the house; and NOT ONE THING WILL BE SAID!”

You don’t need much of a gun, try the local pawn shop.
Spanish arms makers Astra and Star actually made some good stuff. They aren’t imported anymore, but if/when you find a used one for sale, the price will be cheap, but the quality will be decent. In the past, I’ve owned both an Astra Constable .380 (copy of Walther PPK) and a .357 revolver that was a near copy of Smith and Wesson. Both worked well and were quite functionally accurate.
I already have one picked out. It is a 9mm. Will fit into that little hidden pocket in my purse; or in the top drawer within a foot of me from the bed.
Then start making payments! Get. The. Damned. GUN!
